I have an antique level made by Stratton Brothers in Greenfield Mass. It has the date stamped in March 1 1870. It's the 8" constructed of rosewood and brass. I've had it for several years. I've done my study on it and the 8" are the hardest to find. It has two bubbles in it. One is fine but the other is dried out. I've seen them on Ebay and on antique internet sites. I've seen beat up ones go with mid $300's and in outright mint condition mid $400's. The one I have would choose $325-$375. The 12" and 30" only bring about $50- $150. Cause of the rarity of the 8" they choose a lot more. Fantastic that a little level deserves so much. If you research the Stratton Brothers and the history of their levels you'll see why. A few of their earlier things in mint condition has actually been put in galleries. There is an internet site that reveal you ways to specifically restore this level to museum quality. I myself would not do it. It has nice ageing to the brass and rosewood simply the means it is.This is best for the individual who gather old machine shop devices. Do your very own research on it and return to me with an offer. Don't attempt to lowball me with an offer if your just looking to resell it. I've had it for a long time and have no trouble keeping it on my book rack.
